I have visited or stayed in Mucuchies twice now. The first time was a quick visit as part of the El Paramo tour I did from Merida in 2010, a day trip. The most recent
time in 2014 I stayed the night and had a better look around the place. Small Town With A Castle
The town is built on a hillside and the center as usual is Plaza Bolivar and the
cathedral. The plaza has 3 significant monuments, San Isidro, Simon Bolivar with a sword in hand and below him is a farmer and dog bronzework. The only real
other attraction in Mucuchies is the castle on the hill - Castillo de San Ignazio which is located at the north / eastern part of town. And really that's
about all there is to see in Mucuchies unless you walk back and forth along the streets like I did looking for anything else worth seeing. I didn't find a
lot more to see apart from a few pieces of graffiti art, a few colored houses and another small plaza. The restaurants in town I found to be quite expensive -
what you save with cheaper accommodation you spend on a cooked meal at a restaurant. Mucuchies at nearly 3000 meters above sea level, is 36kms from Merida,
25kms from Tabay and 16kms from Los Aleros. I don't think Mucuchies is a place you need to visit especially, stop off and have a quick look then move on.
Continue Along This Road
The road north / east passes through several other cute little places and they all have something worth seeing. That's the best part about this road, just get
on and off the bus when you see a place you like. From Mucuchies I waited for one of the somewhat infrequent local buses to turn up so that I could head
north / east to San Rafael de Mucuchies just 15mins away. This is the place with the stone church, it's pretty cool but don't stay here the night, the hostels
are quite pricey. I took another bus further up the road a bit and stayed in a place called
San Isidro de Apartaderos.
