Unconventional transportation seemed to be the motto of my travels up the Oriente Road this time after hitching a ride in a truck from Gualaquiza to Limon (1hr
40mins). I had a day earlier taken a taxi from Zamora to Yantzaza (30mins). There are of course buses in the Oriente. Limon is a small town around halfway between
Gualaquiza (91kms) and Macas (112kms). On the grand scale, Limon is 208kms north of Zamora and 239kms south of Puyo, again around halfway between these 2 places.
The journey to Limon from Gualaquiza as usual in Ecuador is one with much beautiful scenery with green jungle and forest, bushland, farms, small communities,
spectacular valleys, rivers and bridges, wooden houses hidden in the bushes and large distant mountains. Especially around the area of the town San Juan Bosco
(35kms south of Limon). For me this time, Limon was more of a stopover for a night, but there is plenty to do, see and explore in the area such as waterfalls,
canyoning, flora, birds, reptiles, caves and petroglyphs.
Petroglyphs, Waterfalls & Sights
In the areas and sectors around Limon there are several petroglyphs sites - ancient drawings on rocks.
Read more about the Petroglyph Archeological Complex of Catazho. Petroglifos to see include Sector Numbaime, Chiviaza, Descanso, Ayankas, Cerro Wajarai, Rio
Cumtza, Valle and San Antonio. Waterfalls include Yavintza, Carmen, Chiviaza, Coloradas, Sarambiza, Piama, Rio Ayankas, Rio Chiviaza, Rio Yanguza, Zhuno and
Santa Clara. Other attractions in the area around Limon include Santa Rosa de Mamanguy thermal waters, conservation area Tinajillas, Trogon forest, Ayamtai
cultural center, Catazho mountain, Los Tayos cave, cattle market (feria ganadera), the Chonta festival, Santa Clara lagoon, Catazho archeological park, macaws,
walking tracks and river activities and adventure.
The Town Of Limon
The town of Limon itself is characterized by its wooden buildings, houses, windows and doors. The central park is
pretty with nicely manicured trees and flower gardens. The church stands on the upper side of the park and there are a few hotels around it. Along the street a
little is the market area where you can get some of the local food to eat. The rocky river with many boulders and stones flows on the lower side of town.
Bus To Macas
On the main street in Limon on the other side of the river from the town is where the buses come through for destinations north and south. I headed north to Macas,
a bus trip of 2hrs 45mins.
