Getting south from El Bolson was a long waiting process because the buses are not frequent in this part of Argentina! I would have liked to have got
straight to the border of Chile but that wasn't possible. Instead I had to spend a night in Esquel after arriving in the evening (3hrs bus from El Bolson)
and take a local bus in the morning to Trevelin and pay a taxi to get me to the border of Chile at Futaleufu. Buses to the border from Trevelin only run
on certain days and today was not one of them! (The buses run on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays). Border Crossing at Futaleufu
From Esquel to Trevelin is just 20mins on a local bus, luckily the bus dropped me outside a Remis taxi stop.
From Trevelin it takes 40mins to get to the border and I paid the taxi the equivalent of $36USD for this ($600 pesos). It's a gravel road and very scenic
indeed with open farmland, country houses, horses and livestock, waterways, beautiful trees, snow-capped mountains and a river crossing. Watch out for
cows on the road! The taxi could take me no further than the Argentinian passport control, from here it's a 5 minute walk to the Chilean passport control.
It's 10kms to the Futaleufu town center from here and my options were to walk or hitch a ride so I did both! I walked for a couple of kilometers making
some photos and a video along the way while also trying to hitch a ride. I did eventually get a lift into town thanks to a kind family from Argentina!
I was enjoying the walk, it's nice and peaceful but yeah I really did appreciate getting picked up. Gracias.
Activities Between Trevelin & Futaleufu
Between Trevelin and
Futaleufu are some sights if you are staying in Trevelin! Lake Rosario is 21kms along Route 17 just out of Trevelin which shoots off the main Route 259
to the border. Museum -
Museo Molino Nant Fach is a mill-museum of local history, culture, traditions and stories from the Welsh colonization in 1888.
The museum is located halfway between Trevelin and the border on the main Route 259. Los Cipreses near the border has many nature activities including
hiking and walking, birdwatching, bike riding, fishing and there is camping and other accommodation options such as
Sendero Lodge (for tailor made
fly
fishing programs) or various places that have caba˜as. For me it was nice to be back in Chile with fine sunny weather to enjoy, it's beautiful around Los Cipreses and
Futaleufu!
